Students’ Rights

This is a list of rights guaranteed to students by Laurea University of Applied Sciences’ Degree Regulations and Finnish law. This guide can be consulted in difficult situations in which a student feels that their rights have been infringed. In unclear situations, contact Lauremko’s advocacy specialist for assistance.

1. The right to know beforehand a course’s workload, learning outcomes, working life relevance, type of course, relevant dates, and other information relevant to completion.
  • The study unit and project implementation plan include the actual start and end dates of the studies, the implementing campus, language of instruction, registration period, number of credits, learning outcomes, evaluation criteria and areas, implementation methods, degree workload and mandatory literature. The learning outcomes, schedule and evaluation criteria are reviewed together with the students at the beginning of each study unit.

2. The right to studies that develop working life skills

Coursework must be relevant to a student’s future career. Check if your assignment fulfils the following requirements:

  • Coursework clearly furthers stated learning outcomes and has working life applications. In addition it is in accordance with the principles of learning by developing.
  • Instructions are clear and guide the student’s work. Each assignment’s learning outcome, assignment type, evaluation criteria, and schedule/deadline are easily available.
  • Assignments reflect the size of the area being studied. Students are given a schedule that outlines the time needed to complete the assignment.
  • Assignments enable students to proceed at their own pace

    3. The right to complete your degree on schedule.<br />

    You have the responsibility to plan your studies. Laurea is responsible for making sure its students can complete their study plans and for providing guidance to help students.

    More information:

    • Students draw up a personal study plan within the framework of the degree structure and the curriculum of the education. Students are entitled to complete the studies leading to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accordance with the relevant degree programme and the corresponding curriculum and personal study plan within the period reserved for completing the studies. Students maintain their personal study plans and review them annually with their personal tutors. Students are entitled to receive guidance in drawing up their personal study plan.

    4. The right to receive an assignment’s grade no later than four weeks after it has been turned in.
    • The teacher is responsible for assessing the work completed during the implementation of a study unit or a project no later than four weeks from the completion date. However, they must ensure that the teacher responsible enters the grades of the study unit or project in the study register no later than three weeks from the completion of the implementation (cf. Section 4, the actual end date of the study unit or project to be stated in the implementation plan), unless the teacher’s worktime arrangements dictate otherwise. The teacher must inform the students of their time off or other worktime arrangement if these impact the evaluation period.

    5. The right to receive a course’s grade no later than three weeks after it has been completed.
    • The teacher is responsible for assessing the work completed during the implementation of a study unit or a project no later than four weeks from the completion date. However, they must ensure that the teacher responsible enters the grades of the study unit or project in the study register no later than three weeks from the completion of the implementation (cf. Section 4, the actual end date of the study unit or project to be stated in the implementation plan), unless the teacher’s worktime arrangements dictate otherwise.     6. The right to study guidance.
    • Laurea’s students are entitled to receive personal study guidance throughout their studies. A personal tutor is designated for each student at the beginning of the studies. The personal tutor will support the student in the progress of their studies throughout their study path. The student is obligated to participate in study guidance and to take charge of the progress of their studies.

    7. The right to access evaluation criteria and to access a graded assignment
    • Students have the right to obtain information on how the assessment criteria are applied to their study attainments. Students must be given an opportunity to see the assessed written or otherwise recorded study attainments. Written and otherwise recorded study attainments 
      • Universities of Applied Sciences Act Section 37
    • Students are given an opportunity to review the evaluations of their study attainments in a written form or otherwise stored. The study attainments stored in a written form or otherwise must be retained for at least six months after the publication of the results (Act 932/2014, Section 37). At their discretion, the teacher may return the evaluated study attainments after the period of six months has elapsed.

    8. The right to retake study attainments and to improve a grade

    You may retake a failed study attainment twice and attempt to improve your grade once.

    •  A failed examination or other study attainment can be retaken twice. A failure to attend an actual examination is considered to be one completion attempt.
    • Students have one attempt to improve their grades. Attempts to improve pass grades always target the entire study unit.

    9. The right to recognition and accreditation of prior learning.
    • When studying for a degree, the student may, as determined by the University of Applied Sciences, have studies that they have completed in another Finnish or foreign higher education institution or other educational institution counted towards their degree. 
    • All students are entitled to demonstrate their competence. The recognition and accreditation of prior competence is initiated by the students themselves. The competence is recognised and accredited by the teacher responsible for the module or study unit or another person designated by the director of the UAS unit. The assessment is carried out according to the same criteria and grading scale as that adopted for the corresponding study unit or module.
    • The student is entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence regardless of where, how and when the competence has been acquired.

    10. The right to a discretionary extension of studies
    • Students who are unable to complete their studies during their study entitlement period may request a discretionary extension period to complete their studies. The discretionary extension period may be applied for during the application period announced by the University of Applied Sciences. The student must present specific reasons for applying for an extension. The student must attach to their application a feasible plan and schedule for the completion of their studies.
    • An extension to the study entitlement period may be granted only if it is realistic that the student will graduate during the extension period. As a rule, an extension may only be applied for once and for the maximum duration of one year.

    11. The right to participate in study units or projects in a manner that ensures that the learning outcomes are achieved.
    • The studies and the teaching included in the studies are arranged as either study units or project studies. The studies are arranged in a manner that enables students to complete their studies in an appropriate order, without interruptions and effectively.

    12. The right to justification for compulsory attendance
    • Compulsory attendance in a study unit must be specified and justified in the study unit’s implementation plan.

    13. The right to sick leave

    Students have the right to student benefits even if a short illness prevents them from progressing in their studies as planned. In the case of longer illnesses, students can apply for sick leave and sickness allowance.

    14. The right to a reasonable and appropriate income

    Student benefits are a student’s primary source of income. Students with children under the age of 18 are entitled to a guardianship increase in their student benefits. Students are also entitled to maternity, paternity, and parental allowances as well as sickness allowance and basic social assistance.

    • Laurea is committed to promoting accessible studying in a manner required by the Non-Discrimination Act and Laurea’s equality programme for students.

    • The education provider and the educational institution maintained by it shall evaluate the realisation of equality in their activities and take necessary measures to promote the realisation of equality.

    • Disruptive, offending or threatening behaviour is prohibited in all activities at Laurea.
